A young man named Ambrose Bishop inherited from his great-uncle Septimus Bishop a large old house in the village of Dunwich. The hero decides to move to the picturesque estate, which stands on a hill.

Bishop soon realizes that his grandfather was notorious among the locals. It was rumored that Septimus, along with an unknown creature, had been killed by several villagers, for which they were cursed and soon died.

In the manor, Ambrose found a tower with a telescope, and in the basement he discovered an underground passage leading to an old bridge. On the bank of the river, the hero stumbled upon the bones of a man and an unknown creature. Ambrose took the bones to the cellar, but they were lost there.

At night, the hero found his dead grandfather and a strange scaly creature with the face of a woman in the living room. From horror the hero lost consciousness. His grandfather brought him to his senses and informed him that his grandson was in danger from the locals. The Bishops escape the furious villagers through a tunnel.
