Arthur Dent’s house must be demolished because it interferes with the construction of the highway. After an unsuccessful protest, he goes to a bar with his friend Ford the Prefect. There he discovers that Ford is an alien and that the earth is about to be destroyed because he is interfering with the construction of the hyperspace highway.

To save himself, Ford transfers himself and Adam to a Vong spaceship. For trespassing, the friends are tortured with horrible Vong poetry and then thrown out of the ship altogether. Fortunately, they are picked up by the spaceship Golden Heart, hijacked by Zaford Beeblebrox, a relative of Ford’s. Beeblebrox takes place with Trisha McMillan and the paranoid robot Marvin in search of the mythical planet Magrathea.
