The poem centers on the relationship between two young men, a young man named Aleko and a Romani lady named Zemfira.

The aforementioned representative of the stronger sex valued freedom very much, so he left the cities he hated to go to the steppe countryside. After a while he joined the nomadic gypsies. Later, the guy began to have a love affair with Zemfira, who reciprocated his feelings.

For two years he traveled with the tabor. But one day a piece of music performed by his girlfriend, as well as a dream he saw, clearly demonstrated to him that Zemfira was not faithful. Aleko was seriously traumatized mentally. The father of the protagonist asked the young man not to interfere with her new happiness.

However, the protagonist did not listen to the old man’s advice. Soon he saw Zemfira with his lover and in a fit of rage sent them both to the afterlife. The gypsies, believing Aleko to be selfish, decided to banish him.
