Nick Carraway, a Yale graduate, rents a cabin in upstate New York and studies stockbroking. A certain Jay Gatsby lives in a nearby luxury mansion, regularly throwing raucous parties for all comers. Carraway visits the Buchanans, his cousin Daisy and her husband, who is cheating on his wife with the wife of a roadside garage owner.

Nick receives an invitation to a neighboring villa and meets its owner, about whose wealth there are various rumors. It turns out that a cousin escorted Jay to World War I five years ago, but got tired of waiting and married Tom. Gatsby buys a villa nearby and throws parties, hoping to see his beloved.

Nick arranges a date with his sister at his request. Buchanan, jealous, accuses his rival of «dirty» business. Daisy is confused, and can’t make a choice. She accidentally hits Tom’s mistress with Jay’s car. Buchanan points out the dead woman’s husband to the owner of the car. He kills Gatsby and shoots himself. There were only a few people at the funeral.
