Gyaur, a Christian, fell in love with a beautiful Circassian girl, Leila, who was to marry a wealthy Turk, Hassan. They planned their escape on the day of Ramadan: Leyla disguised herself as a page and escaped from the mosque. For this, Hassan found her and killed her by throwing her body into the water.

Hassan was plunged into deep sorrow, and his only desire was to take revenge on Gyaur. One day he went with a caravan of traders to the bazaar and was ambushed. He saw Gyaur at the head of a gang of outlaws. They began to fight, in the course of the fight Gyaur killed Ghassan.

Gyaur was tormented by the fact that he could not save his beloved. He found out that his soul was doomed to suffer eternally after death, and Hassan’s soul was waiting for paradise.

Gyaur settled in the monastery for seven years. Before he died, he asked permission to confess, and he repented of the murders. He left a ring as a memento for an old friend and asked that his burial be made nameless so that his descendants would not know him.
