Early in the morning, Petya and Leva climb into Mitino’s window. They wake him up to greet the dawn: the friends are playing Indians. Vacation is over, and parting is imminent. On the way home, Lyova suddenly hints to Mitya that he is in love with his sister Sasha, which makes him terribly uncomfortable. They quarrel.

The boy is upset by the girl’s departure, because he wanted to see her and explain himself. One day the teenager runs into her in the hall and she kisses him on the cheek. Now he wants to see her. The uncle goes to town and takes his nephew with him. At the inn, he buys a calf and tells the boy to keep it.

Mitya gets upset, for he is already going to Sasha. Uncle appears a few hours later and announces that they are going home. On the way, they stop at the girl’s gymnasium. Mitya does not have time to say two words before his uncle appears and scolds his nephew for his long absence. Sasha laughs as he watches the boy move the calf and get into the cart. That same evening, Mitya goes to the train station. He feels an emptiness in his soul.
