Darrell traveled to the province of Provence, which is located in France. Gerald’s good acquaintances Marjorie and also Paul lived in that area. They were, according to the writer, unsuccessful artists. Darrell arrived at their home, after which a thunderstorm broke out. Inside the dwelling, all things were placed in a chaotic order.

Marjorie was busy preparing dinner in such a mess. Paul, meanwhile, went to the cellar and brought a wonderful wine which pleased his guest. Gerald also appreciated the food prepared by Margery. The latter later asked Paul if he would remember to show their writer friend the manuscript that had been stored in their house. Paul said that the work was very peculiar.

Marjorie, without letting him finish, said that she had long nightmares after reading it. A few hours after the conversation, Darrell went to the room assigned to him and began to read.
