Sir John «Devil» Hawker was an excellent swordsman and marksman. He had a fearless and violent temper.

He once cheated an aristocratic clubmate, Sir Charles, out of a large sum of money at cards. It happened at Tom Cribb’s place, where boxing and betting were held. The fraud was noticed by the bookie Jakes, who was present in the room. He forces Hawker to sign a paper where he pledges to share his winnings.

But Hawker had no intention of sharing the money. When Jakes tried to take his share of the winnings, the Devil beat him severely.

The bookie turned to Sir Charles. Hawker’s fraud case was tried before the club, of which Sir Charles and «The Devil» were members. Fraud was proven, and Hawker was expelled from the club. He became an outcast, drank himself to death.
