A young doctor, Colenso Ridgen, created a cure for tuberculosis. One day he was faced with a choice to save a friend or the husband of a lady the young man liked a lot.

Colenso Ridgen became famous after inventing the newest drug to eradicate tuberculosis. However, this doctor did not have enough medical resources and for this reason could not treat more than 10 patients at a time.

One day he had to select from a group of 50 patients 10 patients who, in his opinion, were treatable and most worthy of salvation. Soon a young lady approached him and asked him to cure her ailing spouse. The man admits that he may be able to cure another person of tuberculosis. After some time, Mr. Ridgen learns that his companion also needs treatment.

Colenso does not know who should be helped first. The situation is complicated by the fact that the main character falls in love with the aforementioned woman.
