Dante is lost in the woods. There he encountered wild animals that blocked his way. But after a while, the Italian poet encounters the ghost of Virgil. Dante asks the entity that appeared before him for help. Virgil promises to lead him away from this unfortunate place and show him the afterlife. Dante says he is ready to follow him.

Soon, however, the Italian poet wondered if he was capable of enduring such a journey. Virgil told Dante that the latter’s deceased lover, Beatrice, had descended from Paradise to Hell and had asked the ghost to guide the Italian poet on his wanderings through strange places. Dante stopped hesitating and became more resolute.

Above the entrance to Hell was an inscription that deprived those who entered the place of all hope. Virgil and Dante moved on. Just beyond the entrance were the souls of people who had done neither good nor evil deeds during their lives.
