Mickey the fox terrier keeps his own diary. His owner, the girl Zina, thinks that the pet can neither speak nor read, but she is mistaken. The dog, clutching a pencil in his teeth, writes in his notebook. He wonders how often and how much people eat, why the cow gives everyone milk, why the chickens lay so many eggs.

After listening to Zina read a poem, foxy makes up a poem about himself. He plays with kittens, rolls a ball and fights fleas. Doggy does not understand a lot of things in the human world. Mickey writes about his collar, his fight with the hedgehog, the puddles on the floor, the seasons, his owners’ move to town, and his loneliness. He starves in his dacha and runs to the bistro to dance on his hind legs for a portion of meat.

The dog is taken to Paris. He now sleeps on a pillow by the fireplace. The family is going to the sea. Mickey describes his visit to the beach and the zoo. Fox’s life is eventful: a trip to the circus, a steamboat ride. He finishes his diary and dreams that one day it will be printed.
