Frenchman Robin, a political prisoner, escapes from Guiana’s penitentiary. In the woods, he stumbles upon the hut of a leper negro. The fugitive and the old man make their way to the Amazon basin. His wife receives news from unknown friends of Charles’s escape and sets off with the children to Guiana, accompanied by her husband’s friend Nicolas.

The family meets near the Maroni River. The Robinsons find an abandoned site, build a hut, farm, mold dishes out of clay, and raise birds and animals. From a scrap of newspaper, the settlers learn of an amnesty. Ten years pass. The Robens already have a huge farm with many workers: Negroes and Indians. The youngest son and Nicola go to France to get equipment for gold mining.

Roben makes out a concession and organizes the industrial mining of the precious metal. The mine is attacked from time to time by Indians and various bandit gangs, but all attacks are successfully repelled by the brave Robinsons. The colony expands and thrives.
