Núñez was a guide for mountain climbers in the Andes. One day he fell off a cliff and rolled along with an avalanche for a long time. When he woke up, he found himself in an enclosed valley.

Núñez recalled the legend of the Land of the Blind. It used to be difficult to get there, but after the earthquake the path was blocked.

Núñez moved toward the village, where all the houses were windowless. The gait of the inhabitants convinced him that he was faced by blind people. Núñez decided that since he was sighted, it would be easy for him to become king of this disabled community.

But the residents treated his accounts of what he saw as the ravings of a madman. They were the ones who thought he was flawed. To prove his superiority, Nunez punched a resident. But then he fled.

Hunger and fever forced him to return to the village. He fell in love with Medina Sarote, but the girl’s relatives were against the marriage. His father went to the elders for advice. They recommended that Nunez be blinded. He at first agreed to the operation, but then fled the valley
