After the uprising by the Jacobins, the French state split into two camps. Both camps took up arms and moved into hostilities that engulfed all of France.

Despite the popularity of the Jacobins among the people, there were those who retained faith in the French crown. Among them was the nobleman Humbert de Chantelain and his servant Kernan. Humbert demonstrated his loyalty to the king during the Vendée Mutiny by fighting the revolutionaries.

It is also there that Umber learns more of his servant. Namely, that his other servant Carval is more sympathetic to the Jacobins and is already imbued with revolutionary ideas. When the nobleman was absent from his castle, the servant massacred the place. The nobleman’s sister Henri de Tregolan fell under the servant’s blade. At risk was his daughter, Marie.

Together with Kernan, Henri hides in the village of Duarnenez with Marie. Moments later, Carval appears in the village. But Kernan already knows of his arrival.
