Under strange circumstances, Professor Angelle dies. His nephew, going through his belongings, finds a mysterious clay bas-relief depicting the ancient deity Cthulhu. The hero also finds a manuscript, The Call of Cthulhu. From the manuscript he learns that the bas-relief was made by a certain sculptor in a half-conscious state. The professor also hears about the cult of Cthulhu from a policeman who was involved in the capture of a sect that made human sacrifices. The sectarians kept saying that Cthulhu’s time would soon come.

The nephew continues to investigate. He soon learns of the Norwegian sailor Johansen, who is the only survivor of the entire crew. The ship’s crew, during a storm, stumbles upon a strange island city that inspires incomprehensible fear. They accidentally opened the gate and released Cthulhu, who devoured them almost all, and the others went mad with terror. Johansson later died under unknown circumstances.

The hero believes that his great-uncle died at the hands of the Cthulhu cult. Now he fears for his life as well.
