The merchant Lunardo is a real autocrat. He wants to marry his daughter Lucetta to Filipetto, the son of his buddy, the rude and greedy Maurizio. Lunardo does not want the young people to see each other before the wedding and hides the groom’s name from his daughter.

The merchant invites his friends: Maurizio, Simon and his wife Marina, and the townsman Canciano and his wife Felice. In the small circle he wants to announce his engagement.

The bold Felice persuades Marina and Lunardo’s wife Margarita to introduce the young people. So that the impostor husbands do not find out, she prompts Filippeto to disguise himself in a woman’s dress and cover his face with a Venetian mask. The bride and groom meet and fall in love.

The deception is uncovered. Lunardo becomes furious and wants to call off the wedding. But Felice finds the right words. She puts the men in their place and Filipetto is allowed to marry Luchetta.
