The protagonist of the work is Mrs. Mooney.

The aforementioned member of the fair sex was the daughter of a butcher. She was a determined lady and could defend herself if necessary.

One day the girl entered into a marriage alliance with her father’s senior clerk. A little later Mrs. Mooney opened her own butcher shop, which was located near Spring Gardens.

The Mooney couple lived a quiet life until the death of her father’s main character. After his wife’s father’s funeral, Mr. Mooney began to abuse alcohol. His addiction to hot drinks went so far that he began to take the money he earned directly from the cash register of the establishment, get into debt, and even raise his hand against his wife — fights with the latter became a common occurrence.

Eventually the butcher shop went bankrupt. Mrs. Mooney severed relations with her negligent husband and opened a boarding house. Mr. Mooney decided to become a deputy sheriff.
