A novel in the «Hercule Poirot» series. The novel consists of eleven related chapter-stories in which Hercule Poirot pursues members of the Big Four, an international criminal organization.

Poirot is about to go to Argentina, where he is offered good money for an investigation related to a certain «Big Four». From a strange uninvited guest Poirot and Hastings learn that the organization consists of four people: a Chinese — the brain center of the organization, an American — a financial tycoon, a beautiful Frenchwoman and a mysterious executor. Soon the mysterious guest died. He was identified as the English spy Meerling.

Poirot and Hastings begin an investigation, the purpose of which is to expose the criminal gang. Heroes are waiting for dangerous adventures, they are trying by all means to eliminate members of the gang — Poirot trying to bribe, and then finish them off.

In the finale, all the leaders of the «Big Four» die in a trap, skillfully set by Poirot and Hastings.
