The author relates that one day there was a poorly dressed man near the gate of a religious edifice who asked for help from the persons passing by him. According to the domestic poet, the beggar’s appearance left much to be desired — he looked emaciated and barely alive due to the fact that he had not eaten, not drunk, and was in constant suffering for a long time.

The creator claims that the poor man only wanted a piece of bread. Mikhail Yuryevich states that the gaze of the main character of his work embodied the living flour. He writes that some evil person placed an ordinary stone in the unfortunate man’s outstretched hand.

The author turns to the girl, whose name is unknown, and tells her that he wanted to receive from her a sincere and at the same time mutual love. The poet says that at such times he resembles a beggar who asks for alms with bitter tears in his eyes. Lermontov believes that his best feelings are deceived by the beauty.
