At one time a salesman, while in the company of his own comrades, told the latter the story of a business person who worked in the City of London. The adventure he describes occurred eighty years before the story was told.

At that distant time, the hero of the story, Tom Smart, was near Bristol. The weather was disgusting. The man was completely soaked, and exactly the same fate befell his horse. He asked it to run as fast as possible in the direction of the nearest inn, and the animal soon made his dream come true.

This tradesman handed the horse to one of the hotel staff to follow it, while he himself went to assess the interior of the local apartments. He liked everything, but most of all the buffet, which was filled with various delicacies.

Mr. Smart liked the owner of the place very much. But he did not understand why this woman was in a relationship with a man who did not seem at all suitable for her.
