1 minute

Thackeray’s late novel.

The protagonist of the novel, Philip, does not mind taking advantage of wealth, but despises the snobbery and arrogance of modern society. Suddenly, his father goes bankrupt, and the young man finds himself thrown out of the normal course of life.

Philip begins to think how to get out of misfortune, and decides to earn his own living. He does not shy away from work and takes up a trade regardless of the social position he used to occupy. Fate carries him around the world. He experiences many hardships and adventures.

But along the way Philip meets Charlotte, a devoted and loving girl. Together they overcome all their problems. Their hearts remain open to each other. Philip’s friends are characters from the writer’s other novels. They are Arthur Pendennis and Clive Newcome. They, too, come to share his life ideals.

For their fortitude and lack of vanity, Philip and Charlotte are rewarded with marital happiness. They have not degenerated into poverty or succumbed to the temptation of snobbery.
