Holmes is approached by Miss Violet Smith. She earns her living by giving music lessons. Besides her mother, she has an uncle who went to Africa years ago.

A few months ago, she and her mother were tracked down by Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Woodley, acquaintances of the girl’s uncle. He had died in poverty and asked them to take care of his brother’s family.

Mr. Carruthers hires Miss Smith as a music teacher for his daughter. Since some time, she has begun to notice that she is being stalked by a cyclist. Holmes promises to help.

After some time, the girl sends a letter saying that she is going back to her mother.

On the day of her departure, Holmes and Watson find the girl tied to a tree in the woods. She is married to Mr. Woodley by a former priest.

It turns out that the girl’s uncle was rich and she is his only heiress. The crooks Carruthers and Woodley decide that one of them will marry Violet to get the money.

The girl is rescued; the crooks face punishment.
