Three years ago Sherlock Holmes died. At that time a young earl, a card game enthusiast — Ronald Adair — mysteriously dies in London. On the eve of his death he had been playing with Colonel Moran.

Ronald is shot and killed. No one heard the shot, no valuables are missing and the killer is unknown.

Dr. Watson tries to investigate the murder. In the park he meets a strange old man in whom he recognizes Holmes with amazement. The great detective survived the fight with Moriarty and escaped. He returned to London to investigate the murder of Ronald.

Holmes leads Watson to an empty house across the street from his apartment. A wax replica of the detective can be seen in the window. Colonel Moran enters the empty house and shoots the figure with a silenced shotgun, thinking it is Holmes.

Similarly, he kills the young Earl of Adair when he threatens to expose the Colonel for cheating. Moran is arrested.
