Poirot and Hastings went to the block of Mansions. The doorman told him that the Robinsons had been living in the house for six months. Poirot rented an apartment next door for a month, and the friends began to follow the Robinsons. The detective also loosened the lock on the door of their apartment so he could enter if necessary.

The next day Poirot informs Hastings that important naval plans have been stolen in America, which most likely ended up with the famous international spy Elsa Hardt. In order to obtain the documents, the spy murdered the official Luigi Valdarno.
