A novel in the Hercule Poirot series. Millionaire Gordon Clowd dies unexpectedly in a house explosion without leaving a will. His young wife Rosalyn, who, along with her brother David survives, inherits his entire fortune. The rest of his relatives are left without means of livelihood.

A certain Enoch Arden appears in the village and blackmails Rosaline — he claims that her first husband is alive, which means that Gordon’s marriage is invalid. Soon Arden is found dead. The murdered man is identified as Rosaline’s first husband, and all the property goes back to the Cloud family.

Detective Hercule Poirot begins an investigation. While the investigation proceeds, Major Porter and Rosaline Cloud die. But the detective discovers that Arden was actually Charles Trenton. He died as a result of an accident. In addition, the widow turned out to be a fake — the real Rosalyn died with her husband, and David passed her off as his mistress in order to get an inheritance. Now he got rid of the accomplice by poisoning her.
