Six characters come to the theater director and say they want to be his new play. They tell their own story and ask the director to be their new author.

During rehearsal, the premier expresses dissatisfaction that he has to wear a chef’s hat during the course of the play. The director excuses himself that France has long lacked good comedies and they are forced to stage Pirandello’s plays.

Several people, led by an usher, come to the theater and say they are looking for the author. They inform the director that they want to be his new play and tell their story.

Father and Mother are married, but after a while the man notices that his wife likes his secretary. The Father then gave them money so they could live together. Their young son was sent to the countryside. The ex-wife left town and had three more children: a Stepsister, a Boy, and a Girl. The eldest legitimate son did not like the illegitimate offspring.

Mother’s roommate dies and she has to return to her hometown. It turns out that the woman’s employer gave her sewing orders only to force the Stepdaughter into prostitution. The stepdaughter blames her Son and Father for what happened.
