A story from the series «Notes of a Hunter». The author came to Kolotovka tavern. A singing competition was scheduled there, and people who were famous in the neighborhood for their voice were gathering.
The author gives a description of some of the characters — the innkeeper Nikolai Ivanovich and his wife, the regular Obalduy, the rich peasant Morgach, the Tatar Wild Barin, Yashka Turk.

The first to sing the song was a certain rowdy from Zizdra. He sang well, and was approved by the judge, Wild Barin. But then Yashka came forward. He was the son of a captive Turk, and from her adopted a special manner of singing.

His voice was so heartfelt, and the song so lofty, that tears came to everyone’s eyes. Ryadchik himself admitted his defeat.

The author went to sleep in the hayloft. In the morning he returned to the inn. The company did not disperse, the pilot all night, and was already in a pig state. Jashka, in a tattered shirt, was singing a filthy song in a hoarse voice. The author became sad and left Kolotovka.
