While little Bertil waits for his parents to return, he is bored at home alone. One day a tiny boy comes to him. He introduced himself as Niels Karlsson. The heroes immediately became friends. Niels told Bertil about the magic words that, if he said them, he too could turn into a little boy.

To become tiny Bertil also had to press a magic button. After the transformation the friends went to Niels. Using matches, they melted the stove in his hole, and found food. When his parents came, the boy regained his normal height, and they didn’t notice anything.

The next day, Bertil brought his buddy a cup of water and doll furniture. The heroes bathed and scrubbed the floor together, and then furnished Niels’ dwelling with toy furniture.

The children played, ate and had fun together. After a while, Bertil became more cheerful and joyful, as he now had a real friend with whom he could think of many adventures.
