Yakov Shibalok, a Bolshevik ideologue, was the head of the Reds’ unit. All members of the hundred were trying to find and punish members of Ignatiev’s criminal gang.

At one time Shibalok’s men found a lady lying unconscious near one of the Don villages. When the representative of the fair sex regained consciousness, she told Yakov the story that she had been raped by the local bandits. Her name was Daria. The main character felt sorry for her and decided to take her with him.

The man tried several times to convince the woman to leave his combat unit, reasoning that the hundred was not meant for the lady. Nevertheless, Daria refused to do so.

Soon the lady became pregnant by the protagonist and after a while gave birth to a child. During the birth, she confessed to Yakov that she had been a sleeper agent in the ranks of his hundred the whole time. The woman added that she had previously been Ignatiev’s mistress. Shibalok killed her and began to raise the baby on his own.
