1 minute

The novel largely reflects the «Venetian» period in the life of George Sand and her relationship with the poet Alfred de Musset.

Thérèse Jacques and Laurent de Fauvel are artists. They are different and at the same time — kindred spirits.

Thérèse has experienced many things in her life, including the betrayal of the man she loves. She is naive and betrayed. Laurent is a genius, but in the depths of his soul, demons frolic. At first, Laurent and Teresa are friends and are happy to have found each other. Then they fall in love with each other, but their love is very painful.

Laurent is jealous of Therese for everything. He is rude to her and then asks for forgiveness. He loves her, then he hates her. And all of this repeats itself many times. The lovers go to Italy, but even there they do not find their happiness. The more their feelings are reciprocated, the more they suffer.

Laurent and Teresa cease to understand each other. They cannot live together, but their loneliness kills them, and the breakup is painful but inevitable for both.
