Ruby hides her in the barn, but the girl is found by Loopy-eyed. He kills Tommy, who tries to stand up for Temple, then rapes her with a corncob. Then he takes her to another town and hides her.

Goodwin is accused of killing the fool. Benbow becomes his lawyer.

He finds Temple, but she blames Lee for everything, fearing Lupus. Goodwin is found guilty. The crowd holds a lynching, then burns Lee’s body.
