Two friends, Roslavlev and Zaretsky, meet on Nevsky Boulevard. Roslavlev was in love with Polina Lidina. The girl’s mother has demanded that he resign. The hero is worried about a possible war with Napoleon, but the thought of seeing Polina warms his soul. The man goes to the girl’s parents, and they set a date for the wedding.

The Lydin family returns home over a narrow bridge. The carriage doors open, and Polina’s younger sister falls into the water. Roslavlev rushes to the rescue and saves the girl, but she soon falls ill. Polina asks to postpone the wedding.

Polina tells her sister that she has fallen in love with another man. Roslavlev receives a letter from a friend telling him about the start of the war with Napoleon, and he departs for the army. Roslavlev, after being wounded, goes to the Lidins. He hears singing, looks into the church, where he sees the wedding ceremony of Pauline and Senicur.
