1 minute

Eliza Doolittle was making a living selling flowers in London’s Covent Garden neighborhood.

One day she notices that her wares interest Colonel Pickering. While the lady tries to sell the man flowers, a random passerby tells her that the gentleman standing next to her, the linguist Henry Higgins, marks everything she says. Mrs. Doolittle begins to worry that Mr. Higgins is a law enforcement officer. The protagonist stops worrying only after Henry reveals his name to her.

It is soon discovered that both the colonel and the linguist are fond of phonetics and also admire each other. Pickering has returned from India to come to meet Higgins, while the latter had planned to travel to that Asian country to find the former. Henry declares that he could easily pass off an ordinary flower girl as an aristocrat by teaching her the correct manner of speech.
