The talented sculptor Pygmalion made statues that could easily be mistaken for living people. The only thing that separated them from the living human beings was an unnaturally white complexion.

Pygmalion once had a large ivory in his studio. Pygmalion immediately set to work carving a sculpture of a woman. His creation was so beautiful that it caught the eye of the goddess Venus herself.

Without saying anything, the sculptor fell in love with the beautiful statue, which he called Galatea. He brought her flowers, dressed her in gorgeous outfits, and gave her gifts. He even seated his creation at the table, bringing a variety of treats to his beloved’s lips.

Unable to bear his feelings, the sculptor decided to ask Venus to send him a soulmate who would be beautiful at least a little like the statue. One day Pygmalion came home and was thrilled to find that the goddess of love had breathed life into his creation. Galatea and the sculptor were married. Soon they had a son, Paphos.
