The Bennett family lives in a small town: a father, a mother, and five daughters. The eldest, Jane and Elizabeth, are the protagonists of the novel.

One of the richest estates is rented by a single, wealthy aristocrat, Bingley. He arrives with his sister and friend Darcy. The girls’ mother wants one of them to marry a wealthy groom. After a while, Bingley and Jane fall in love with each other. His sister does not like this and takes her brother to London.

A cousin, Collins, comes to visit the Bennetts. After the girls’ father dies, he inherits their estate, as the man had no sons. The cousin informs him that he has received a parish in the estate of Lady de Beer, Darcy’s aunt. He wants to marry, as the ministry and his benefactress requires. Lest the cousins be deprived of the estate, Collins wishes to take one of them as his wife.

He proposes to Elizabeth, but she refuses him. Soon Collins marries her friend. Elizabeth meets a young officer, Wickham, who arrives with the regiment stationed in town.
