She plans to become a maid or a cook. Later, the girl tries to succeed as a writer in order to make money writing short stories. In the end, her attempts fail. Despite this, the heroine tries to maintain her former optimism, but gradually it begins to evaporate.

Pauline moves to Boston, where she takes in the care of a sad and withdrawn woman whose nephew has gone missing. Here the girl makes new friends: Mrs. Carew and Jamie, a future literary genius confined to a wheelchair.
