The main character is a member of the younger generation named Pip.

At one time, the latter was walking not far from the cemetery, on the territory of which the graves of his parents were located. While there, he met a runaway prisoner, who appeared to him to be an extremely hungry and very angry man. The perpetrator grabbed the boy and, under threat of physical violence, demanded that he bring him a small supply of food as well as a drink.

After a while, Pip returned home and began to think of ways to steal supplies from the pantry run by his older sister.

At dawn, the child stole bread, a piece of cheese, a pork pie, and a bottle of vodka from the storeroom. Later he took a drink from the forge. The protagonist’s conscience tormented him — he had never stolen anything before.

Soon Pip gave the stolen goods to the escaped convict. He was delighted with this turn of events. But the criminal’s happiness did not last long — in the evening the police caught him.
