Low-income stenographer Alex Martin one day receives an inheritance from her aunt and meets the man of her dreams-Gerald Martin. Her colleague Dick, in love with the woman, warns her that Gerald is not who he says he is.

A month after the wedding, Gerald and Alex live happily in the picturesque Philomel Cottage. Alex often has a dream in which Dick kills Gerald, and she is grateful to Dick. A former colleague sometimes calls Alex, but she pushes him away.

Once Alex talks to George, the gardener, who tells him that Gerald told him that Alex is going to London next week for an indefinite period of time. Alex goes through her spouse’s papers and begins to question his past. From one article, the girl learns that her husband is a crook, bigamist, and murder suspect named Lemetre. Gerald tries to kill Alex, who stalls for time and tells her husband that she poisoned him. Dick and a policeman arrive at the cottage and see that Gerald has died of fright.
