Per Gynt is a cheerful country boy, a joker and a dreamer. His mother asks the wealthy Ingrid to be his bride, but the girl is married off to another man. Per leaves for the wedding, causes a scandal, kidnaps Ingrid and leaves another man’s bride in the woods.

Wandering through the forest, Per meets the daughter of the forest king and is asked to marry her. To become lord of the forest, Per must fulfill the trolls’ harsh conditions. The boy is not ready for that. He escapes, sets up a cabin in the forest, and lives there, first alone and later with the quiet and loving Solveig.

The quiet happy life ends when the daughter of the king of the forest appears and claims his son’s Pera. Gunt flees without explaining himself to Solveig. Years of unbelievable wanderings and adventures await him. Years later, the gray-haired Per returns to the forest hut. There the faithful Solveig awaits him.
