James Parker Pine is a retired government employee who considers himself a «detective of the heart.» He advertises his services in the Times newspaper and not only solves crimes, but also helps his clients find personal happiness.

In the story «Major Wilbraham Seeks Peril,» Mr. Pine is approached by Mr. Wilbraham, a retired military man who lacks adventure in his life.

In the story «The Case of the Conscientious Girl,» Pine’s new client wants to return a diamond ring she once stole from a friend.

But Parker has also had his share of mishaps. For example, in the story «The Case of the Unhappy Husband,» a client who dreams of getting his wife back has fallen in love with a fake «sweetheart.»

In the story «Anything You Want,» the detective has an unusual adventure on the Orient Express. And in the story «The Priceless Pearl,» Pine easily finds the lost earring.
