A book about the life of Australian Aborigines. In it, the author talks about the peculiarities of their life and character, as well as those who deny them equal rights with the Anglo-Australians.

The author goes by boat from Red Island Point wharf in northern Australia to Thursday Island. In 1849 a British warship was sailing in these waters. Its captain decided that the crew needed to go ashore. As they landed, a naked white woman, Barbara Thompson, ran out to them.

She, her husband, and four other men had gone out to sea four years earlier. They were trying to find the wreck and salvage the cargo. The men quarreled and the boat sank near Entrance Island. Only Barbara survived. She was rescued by the islanders, and one of them took her as his wife.
