Jerome shares with the reader memories from his childhood. During those years, he adored delicious food. In addition, the author writes that he never had any problems with his digestive system.

One day a gentleman, whose name is unknown, came to the Jerome family home. The latter paid attention to the appetite with which the future writer devoured lunch. The guest asked the boy’s father if he suffered from dyspepsia. The child’s father replied that he had never heard his son complain of ill health.

Soon he called little Jerome Crocodile, and then asked him if he was suffering from the aforementioned disease. The boy stated that he did not. The child decided to ask the adults what this digestive disorder was. The gentleman said, in a pitiful voice, that little Jerome would learn about it when he was older.
