A story in the form of correspondence between the Haverhill couple, their distant acquaintance Henry Winters, and a bookstore. A friend of the couple asks for a book (Chapman’s guide to growing violets) that was borrowed from him two years ago. Since the work in question had been temporarily withdrawn from sale, Winters could not purchase another copy.

Brian Haverhill reports in a reply letter that his wife is visiting relatives. In spite of this, he promises to write to her to send the book immediately.

On receiving the letter from her husband, Sally tells him that the book is in their house and asks her to send it to Winters. She notices that he is angry and thinks he is not a good man. In addition to Chapman’s guide, the heroes picked up another book, The Village Dirt, which they wanted to return along with the first, but could never find.
