The author describes his time as a child. When the future writer was a child, he lived with his own family in the East End of London. The boy’s father thought that the place of residence was well chosen — that’s what he said to his astonished comrades.

The window of the room in which Jerome lived, overlooked an ancient cemetery, which had many graves. It seemed to the future writer that ghosts wandered among them. At first he was afraid of them, and then he even began to treat them with sympathy. The author was interested in thinking about what moved these entities and what exactly they felt. Such thoughts made him feel sad.

One evening little Jerome was sitting by the window, as usual. After a while he felt his mother’s hand touching his shoulder. The future writer explained to his mother the reasons for being at the window. The woman did not answer anything, but only took her son, and then put him on the bed. Soon he fell asleep.
