But he does not want to marry Myra, fearing the wrath of his family, who have guarded Knowleton from female hunters of his fortune. However, he cannot refuse the girl’s engagement and gives her an expensive ring.

After a while, Knowleton invites her to the estate to meet his parents. The girl arrives and is struck by the eccentricity of his father and mother. Myra does not like them.

One day she hears a conversation from which she learns that Whitney’s «parents» are hired actors. The play is set up to scare Myra away. Knowleton is ashamed, remorseful, and ready to actually marry Myrka.

But the girl does not forgive and retaliates-she arranges a fake marriage and elopes. She decides to send the wedding and engagement rings to her «husband» by mail.
