On a street, the narrator notices a sign saying «Madame Dash, the Chiromancer,» and decides to look inside. He knocked on the door, whereupon he was told he could enter.

It was half dark inside, as the window was obstructed by a portiere. The fortuneteller sat down at the table, handed the narrator a crystal and told him to cover it with his hands. While doing so, he should think only of what he wanted to hear from her.

The woman tells him that the visitor is a man of vulnerability and restraint, due to which he has never been understood. His loving heart no one noticed, and the hero stopped believing people. He saw through others and could understand when they were not telling the truth. The evaluation of the narrator’s character strongly coincided with his idea of himself.

The fortune-teller promises that soon money will come to the visitor from two sides. The benefactors will be two men, one of them in years and the other quite young. The teller will sign something new, which will bring him great joy.
