A novel in the «Hercule Poirot» series. The famous detective travels on his way from Syria to Baghdad. During his visit to excavations there, the inexplicable murder of Mrs. Louise Lidner, wife of the head of the expedition, archaeologist Dr. Lidner, occurs.

Shortly before her death, Mrs. Lydner confesses to nurse Amy Lederen, who is caring for her, that she is mortally frightened. Her first husband, Frederick is a German spy. The woman betrayed her husband to the secret service and he was shot, but he may have survived and wants revenge. After her marriage to Mr. Lydner, she began to receive threatening letters. Louise sees danger everywhere.

And now, Miss Lydner is killed by a blow to the head. Dr. Riley suggests that she seek the help of the famous detective Hercule Poirot, who is now near the camp of the expedition. After a thorough investigation, Poirot manages to find out that Louise was killed by her husband, Mr. Lyndner, because he is in fact her first husband, Frederick Bosner, who could not forgive his wife’s betrayal.
