Augustus’ cousin arranged for him to become godfather to his son. However, according to Dickens, Mr. Means performed his duties poorly because he never saw his own godson. The author believes that this situation was due to the fact that the protagonist did not treat his own man very well.

Mr. Bodden accumulated a small fortune due to his sincere passion for making baked goods. At one time he bought a cottage near London to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the countryside with his beloved wife as well as his only son.
