Puntila is one of many German landlords who share many of the traits of other landowning nobles. Powerfulness and pride in belonging to a special noble family are also characteristic of this aristocrat.

But other people know the nobleman as a kind and generous gentleman who is able to help other people. Puntila once paid for food and beer for all the people who were in the same tavern with him.

However, this (and many other good deeds of the landowner) were done while intoxicated. Any trip of the gentleman to a bar, tavern, or other establishment where it is possible to buy alcohol, ends with a hilarious adventure with an attraction of unseen generosity from the aristocrat. Each time after such evenings, Puntila became enraged at his own recklessness

Sometimes a nobleman might linger in a tavern for several days, leaving his purse with his driver Matti. And after the revelry is over, Puntila’s sobering up looks amusing even to the chauffeur.
