Writer Anthony Eastwood becomes embroiled in a fascinating detective story and must save a beautiful woman from death. But hapless Anthony himself becomes a victim of fraud.

Writer Anthony Eastwood has a creative crisis and cannot write a single line. Suddenly there is a phone call. A girl who introduces herself as Carmen asks to be rescued. Anthony must go to an antique store and utter the code word «cucumber.»

Intrigued, Anthony carries out the errand. An elderly woman takes him to Carmen, who is happy to see him. Suddenly the police arrive. Anthony is arrested for the murder of Anna Rosenburg. Anthony tries to prove that he is not Conrad Fleckman and did not kill anyone. He brings the police to his house and shows them his papers. Anthony’s identity is confirmed, and the inspector tells him the story of Conrad Fleckman, the criminal who hunted for the Spanish shawl.

After telling the story, the inspector leaves. Anthony leaves the office and realizes that he has been robbed. While the «inspector» was distracting Anthony, his accomplices took everything of value out of the apartment.

Anthony sits down at his typewriter and begins to write a new novel, The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl.
